Zingiber acuminatum var. borneense

Description: Small vegetative stalks (less than 3 feet tall) with pulvinus, short ligule and no petiole. Flowers borne in cones, but bracts are smaller and less tightly spaced than in most other Zingiber described here. Both peduncle and bracts are bright red. Peduncle lies along the ground, so cones are barely above the leaf litter. Flowers are cream-colored.

Distribution: Maliau Basin

Ecology/Habitat: Found along the trail in open canopy and wet soil. Gingers of this size appear to dominate the open, wet understory of this region, but few were in bloom during this observation period.
