Morphospecies 18

Description: Plants are small (less than 3 feet tall). Leaves have an extremely unusual waved or crimped pattern, with long white leaf underside and leaf sheathing hair. Ligules are short and cleft, petioles are short. Flower position is also unusual, with lily-shaped inflorescences borne as a side shoot towards the base of every vegetative stalk. Flowers are tubular and red, with short bracts around each flower, much like Amomum longpedunculis.

Distribution: Sepilok

Ecology/Habitat: This species was also found planted at the Sepilok Rainforest Discovery Center. Its highly ornamental leaf pattern suggests that it is a horticultural variety, and unlikely to have a natural distribution.
