Communication resources
- Computer to computer:
- Video, Mac-to-Mac:
iChatAV. Amazing! The future is here! I participated in the first
day of an NCEAS meeting from my home office. Coming with next
release, 3-way video conferencing.
- Voice, Mac-to-Mac: iChatAV, Skype
- Text, Mac-to-Mac/AIM:
iChat, AOL Instant Messenger
- Text, All-to-All: Yahoo! Messenger
- Shared sketchpad: Groupboard. Local example.
- Computer to phone: SkypeOut.
Two US cents per minute in among US/Europe/Australian
destinations. Reasonable rates to the rest of the world. Will even
work over dial-up from your back-of-beyond hotel room (well, maybe!).
- Satellite phone (Asia): ACeS
- Data via spread-spectrum radio: Freewave. Local example.
Unix (and Darwin/X11) resources
(See also my software pages)
- pine. Yes I still use
pine for email. It’s still the most efficient for me, although it’s getting
harder to use it with SMTP servers that use authentication. You’ll
also need fetchmail
- rsync. Can you believe I just discovered this utility after
years of unix use? Duhhh! Vital for maintaining a website, but
developing it locally.
