Family Monimiaceae. Order Laurales.

Large trees to shrubs. Buttresses absent. Spines absent. Stilt roots absent. Bark yellow, gray; not peeling in strips. Slash yellow, orange. Vertical stripes in the inner bark or wood absent. Odor aromatic. Exudate absent. Terminal buds not enclosed by leaves.

Complex hairs present, or absent; star-like. Stinging hairs absent. Mature twig indumentum absent.

Leaves opposite; not scale-like; simple; of different sorts on a single twig, or all of the same type; not modified into spines; coriaceous, or leathery; gland-dotted, or not gland-dotted; symmetric at the base; not dissected; smooth margined, or with small to large teeth on margin. Epidermis not waxy. Venation pinnate. Secondary veins open; prominent. Smallest veins prominent; net like. Intramarginal vein present. Stalk of blade less than a quarter the length of the blade; not winged; attached to base of leaf blade; not swollen. Stipules absent. Domatia absent. Basal glands absent. Hairs on mature leaf present, or absent; dense, or sparse.

Inflorescences present; terminal, or axillary; the flowers from a single point on the stem, or on a branched axis; specialized inflorescence units absent; numerous and persistent inflorescence bracts absent. Flowers at least some flowers unisexual; with male and female flowers on the same plant; stalked; about 0.5 cm long or across; round; with male or female parts not raised on a column. Hypanthium absent. Disk absent. Perianth present; with all whorls looking like tepals. Tepals 4-10 (female with 5 pairs of decussate tepals, male with 2-4 pairs). Stamens 6-9; filaments present; free of each other; free of the perianth; of different sizes. Anthers 1 loculed; not awned; dehiscing by long slits. Ovary superior. Carpels separate; 100 (many). Locules 1. Styles free. Stigmas 1 lobed; not distinctive. Fruit drupaceous; fleshy; not multiple; not splitting; enclosed in, or sitting on, the fleshy receptacle; wingless. Seeds 1 per fruit; less than 5 mm, or about 1 cm long; wingless; uniform in cross-section; aril absent; endospermic.

Slash aromatic; leaf veins prominent and widely spaced, looping and meeting before the margin; leaves opposite and exstipulate; terminal bud surrounded by cataphylls; flowers with a small opening surrounded by decussate tepals. Taxon images: kibara.gif
