Software

  • We will only use free/open source software. Open source software:
    • is legal (most software in developing countries is illegal)
    • will not trap you (e.g., lockout of cracked Windows)
    • uses open formats which are safest for long term data security
    • often offers higher quality tools
  • We installed:
    • Open office (with Java RE if needed) / NeoOffice
    • R (with packages)
    • NotePadPlus / TextWrangler
    • JabRef
  • Citation management is a very important tool. JabRef: export as formatted bibliography, links to PDSs.

  • IP numbers, DHCP
  • Intranet
  • Webserver on http://192.168.1.100
  • File sharing
