Leaves spiral, or two-ranked; not scale-like; simple; all of the same type; not modified into spines; coriaceous; not gland-dotted; symmetric at the base; not dissected; smooth margined, or with small to large teeth on margin. Epidermis waxy, or not waxy. Venation pinnate. Secondary veins open; prominent, or not prominent, but visible. Smallest veins prominent, or not prominent, but visible; net like. Intramarginal vein present, or absent. Stalk of blade less than a quarter the length of the blade to more than half the length of the blade; not winged; attached to base of leaf blade; swollen; swollen at one end (top). Stipules present, or absent; free from one another; laterally placed; not encircling the twig; scale-like; fringed, or not fringed; small; not persistent. Domatia present, or absent; pit-like; scattered along midrib. Basal glands absent. Hairs on mature leaf absent.

Inflorescences present; axillary, or superaxillary; on an unbranched axis, or on a branched axis (E. brevipes); specialized inflorescence units absent; numerous and persistent inflorescence bracts absent. Flowers bisexual, or at least some flowers unisexual; with male and female flowers on the same plant; stalked; about 0.5 cm long or across, or to about 3 cm long or across; round; with male or female parts not raised on a column. Hypanthium absent. Disk present; the stamens inside the disk. Perianth present; with distinct calyx and corolla whorls. Sepals (3-)4-5(-6); free, or partially joined; not persistent in fruit; not growing any further after flowering. Epicalyx absent. Petals present; (3-)4-5(-6); free; fleshy, or not fleshy; deciduous; stalked, or not stalked; lobed, or fringed like a comb. Stamens 6-60(-100) (many); filaments present; free of each other; free of the perianth; all equal in size; isomerous, or diplostemonous, or triplostemonous, or polystemonous; alternating with the sepals (when isomerous). Anthers 2 loculed; attached by the base; awned, or not awned; dehiscing by pores. Ovary superior. Carpels joined; 2-5. Locules 2-5. Styles solitary. Stigmas 1 lobed; not distinctive. Fruit drupaceous; fleshy, or non-fleshy; not multiple; not splitting; not enclosed in, or sitting on, fleshy perianth parts; wingless. Seeds 2-5 per fruit; less than 5 mm, or about 1 cm long; wingless; with folds like marble, in cross- section; aril absent; endospermic.
