I have taken an alternative route in academia:
affiliated with a major university but living and
working in Indonesia, a choice made after declining an
assistant professorship offer in the US. The primary
cost in this decision is not having `official' graduate
students and postdocs of my own. However, I am finding
many ways to advise and teach, and am very pleased to
consider requests for input and oversight. I am
available to stand as an external examiner on graduate
student committees. I have extensive experience
teaching both in the classroom and in the field, and
teach an annual a Harvard
Summer School Field Course to Borneo.
