Small trees to shrubs, or climbers. Buttresses absent. Spines absent. Stilt roots absent. Bark gray, brown; not peeling in strips. Exudate absent. Terminal buds not enclosed by leaves.

Complex hairs present, or absent; star-like, or T-shaped. Stinging hairs absent. Mature twig indumentum present, or absent; dense, or sparse.

Leaves opposite; not scale-like; simple, or compound; pinnate; with a terminal leaflet; leaflets opposite; all of the same type; not modified into spines; coriaceous; not gland-dotted; very asymmetric at the base, or symmetric at the base; not dissected; smooth margined to with small to large teeth on margin. Epidermis waxy, or not waxy. Venation pinnate. Secondary veins open, or closed; prominent. Smallest veins prominent, or not prominent, but visible; net like, or ladder like. Intramarginal vein present, or absent. Stalk of blade absent to less than a quarter the length of the blade; not winged; attached to base of leaf blade; not swollen. Stipules absent. Domatia absent. Basal glands absent. Hairs on mature leaf present, or absent; dense, or sparse.

Inflorescences present; terminal, or axillary, or on the trunk or branches; on an unbranched axis, or on a branched axis; specialized inflorescence units present, or absent; specialized inflorescence units corymbs; numerous and persistent inflorescence bracts absent. Flowers bisexual; not stalked, or stalked; with the parts barely visible to the eye to about 0.5 cm long or across; somewhat asymmetric to with one plane of symmetry; with male or female parts not raised on a column. Hypanthium absent. Perianth present; with distinct calyx and corolla whorls. Sepals 2-5; partially joined; not persistent in fruit; not growing any further after flowering. Epicalyx absent. Petals present; 4-5; all joined; not fleshy; deciduous; not stalked; entire. Stamens 4; filaments present; free of each other; joined to the perianth; of different sizes; anisomerous. Anthers 2 loculed; attached along the side; not awned; dehiscing by long slits. Ovary superior. Carpels joined; 2. Locules 2-4 (2 or 4). Styles solitary. Stigmas 2 lobed; not distinctive. Fruit drupaceous; non-fleshy; not multiple; not splitting; not enclosed in, or sitting on, fleshy perianth parts; wingless. Seeds 1 per fruit; less than 5 mm to about 1 cm long; wingless; uniform in cross-section; aril absent; non-endospermic.
