Inflorescences represented by solitary flowers only; axillary. Flowers bisexual; to about 3 cm long or across; round; with male or female parts not raised on a column. Hypanthium absent. Disk absent. Perianth present; with distinct calyx and corolla whorls. Sepals 3; free; not persistent in fruit; not growing any further after flowering. Epicalyx absent. Petals present; 6; free; fleshy; deciduous; stalked; entire. Stamens 100 (many); filaments absent; free of the perianth; all equal in size; polystemonous. Anthers 2 loculed; not awned; dehiscing by short slits. Ovary superior. Carpels separate; 2-3. Locules 1. Styles solitary. Stigmas 1 lobed; not distinctive. Fruit berry-like; fleshy; not multiple; not splitting; not enclosed in, or sitting on, fleshy perianth parts; wingless. Seeds 1-5 per fruit; less than 5 mm to about 1 cm long; wingless; with folds like marble, in cross- section; aril absent; endospermic.
Petal whorls equal or subequal; petals clawed; no intramarginal vein.
